During this year, the Treaty of Lisbon is going through its process of national ratification. One interesting thing about this is that national ratification actually is not the process where the people and inhabitants of the diverse nations of the Union are saying yea or nay to the proposal. No, the truth is that this is the process where the lawmakers, the founders of the proposal, are the ones who ratifies.
Is this democracy? Maybe. Is it fair to the individual that in the future has to live and abide by its rules? In my mind, no.
With this said, or written, I will try to explain the title of this post. This introduction is not completely accurate; because one nation stands above the others, one nation among the democracies of the European Union excels, one of this nations has a constitution and a leadership that respects its people. This nation is Ireland. Ireland will hold a general referendum on the ratification of the treaty. Which means that this is the only time a decision will be taken, on the issue, by a group of people that in reality has something in common with all people of the Union, that/which is, again in reality, nothing.
That is why I know would like, for myself, to extend a plea to all the electorate of Ireland: vote no. A no can be just a no to the Treaty itself, but it can also a no I will not stand silent while the people of the nations of the European Union are deprived of their rights to form their own future. In this respect a no is not a a no to the Treaty, it is a no to mistreatment of others. I have the greatest respect for the Irish and the political system of Ireland and this is in no way a suggestion that the Irish let other people affect their political will and system of referendums. I only ask that You, the Irish, take all of is in account when You goes to vote on this issue.
In my mind, Your no will only be a stand for equality and justice. Make this a real Union and let us decide on its future together.
Har du sett Ken Loaches The Wind That Shakes the Barley?
I’m Irish and will certainly be voting No!
The EU politicians need a lesson about democracy – how dare they try to implement something of a constitutional nature above the heads of 500m citizens.
The EU people have a right to a say in how Europe is run!
Regards!
